Interior designer chicago or interior decorator chicago!? Well same thing for most of us, what I mean to say is that I wouldn't know the difference a day ago. A buddy of mine is remodeling his house so he gave me a few pointers over a few beers. Apparently he got stuck with a freelance decorator instead of designer, or as he put it a "freelance professional decorator" in other words just a dude who will take less money, for more or less the same job the designer does or it was what he thought at the time. The thing is that decorators do not have any schooling, just a few months of courses. Unlike the interior designers who must have a four year degree in interior design. And this guy was even picked from a hat (read: was the cheapest!).
So the thing is that trying to save a few bucks he lost a lot of time. Mainly because this guy he hired was without, or at least with a very bad taste in designing/decorating. But this was only one “bad apple” and it shouldn’t be a standard for measuring all freelancers, because there are some good freelancers. Anyways, obviously he got fired, and replaced with interior designer, who is backed-up from a big company. Yes it will be a little more expensive, but at least you can enjoy a nice cold one with a friend.
Of course, recommendations cannot hurt. Someone who has an eye for the job, and previously has outdone himself, is a good choice! Simply some people just have a natural edge at this things. They can just look at a place and have the perfect solution in seconds and no one can deny that. But the final decision is up to you. The best you can to is balance between wishful thinking and the things you can do with your budget.
